With Rain on the Way, City Streets Are Ready

11.21.24

With up to an inch and a half of rain in the forecast, Visalia streets are ready.

"Visalia streets are specifically designed for a specific rain intensity and duration. While it may seem odd to see water in the roadway, they’re designed to hold rainwater," shares Nick Bartsch, Public Works Director. "This allows the City’s storm water system to catch up when rainfall comes in a short time frame."

When heavy rain arrives, it can take three to four hours in some areas for stormwater to clear. It’s during this time that it’s important for motorists to drive carefully, increase the distance between you and the car ahead, and slow down.

Visalians play an important role in helping keep streets clear, as quick cleanups can make big impacts.

"Our Public Works team works year-round prepping for stormy weather, but it’s a team effort between the Public Works Department and residents," adds Bartsch.

Working Together

Residents are asked to keep their neighborhoods clear of trash and debris, because clearing drains and rain gutters now can help keep things flowing properly when rain really hits.

The City of Visalia Public Works Department prepares year-round for winter rain by maintaining the storm drain system, creeks and basins to maximize the capacity for drainage and storage of storm runoff.

Once rainwater clears, it enters an extensive network of underground pipelines that channel storm water from roadways into the open waterways and ponding basins located throughout the city.

City of Visalia Public Works crews will continue to work through the storm and will remain on standby for inclement weather. However, residents are reminded it’s never too late to make sure all trash and yard waste is properly contained in City-issued bins and that any automotive leaks or spills are cleaned up.
