Elections

City Council members began being elected by district in the November 2016 election.

There are five council members and Council members serve a four-year term with no limits.

To qualify, a candidate must be a registered voter of the City of Visalia. To become a registered voter of the City of Visalia one must reside within the city limits, be at least eighteen years of age, and register to vote with Tulare County Elections Office.

After the election every two years, council members elect one member to serve as mayor and one to serve as vice-mayor. Time commitment of a council member? The Visalia City Council normally meets the first and third Monday's of each month at 4:00 p.m. In addition to the regularly scheduled council meetings, council members will generally spend time reviewing material in preparation for the meetings, attend additional meetings as required, and may call for some travel.

2022 City Council Elections

The 2022 November General Municipal Election will include four of the five Visalia City Council positions on the ballot.

These are:

• City Councilmember District 1 (Please note, this is for an unexpired term, the successful candidate will serve until the 2024 election after which time this seat will be up for re-election for the full four-year term)
• City Councilmember District 3
• City Councilmember District 4
• City Councilmember District 5

The members represent the City and their respective Districts, serve four-year terms and they select one member to serve as mayor and one to serve as vice-mayor.

The filing period for candidates who wish to run for a position on the Visalia City Council opens on July 18, 2022 and closes on August 12, 2022. Those who wish to run will need to file with the California Fair Political Practices Commission and County of Tulare Registrar of Voters.

Please note that the Tulare County Registrar of Voters has Visalia’s previous City Council District boundaries, as they cannot being implementing the new boundaries adopted in February of this year until the June 7, 2022 Primary Election has been certified.

The City’s adopted district boundaries will be fully implemented at the Tulare County Registrar of Voters no later than July 8, 2022. For those contacting the Registrar, they should ask to be directed to Stephanie Hill, Tulare County Registrar of Voters Systems & Procedures Analyst.
