City Council members began being elected by district in the November 2016 election.
There are five council members and Council members serve a four-year term with no limits.
To qualify, a candidate must be a registered voter of the City of Visalia. To become a registered voter of the City of Visalia one must reside within the city limits, be at least eighteen years of age, and register to vote with Tulare County Elections Office.
After the election every two years, council members elect one member to serve as mayor and one to serve as vice-mayor. Time commitment of a council member? The Visalia City Council normally meets the first and third Monday's of each month at 4 p.m. In addition to the regularly scheduled council meetings, council members will generally spend time reviewing material in preparation for the meetings, attend additional meetings as required, and may call for some travel.
